Programme Description:Handwriting is a basic skill needed by almost all of us. Some individuals with autism may find it challenging to acquire handwriting skills due to difficulties in their motor co-ordination and/or sensory issues.

This workshop will present an overview of the issues and difficulties faced by individuals with autism in acquiring handwriting skills. In addition, participants will be exposed to strategies in teaching handwriting skills to individuals with autism as well as strategies to accommodate these individuals’ difficulties in acquiring handwriting skills.
Learning Goals:Participants in this workshop will:
  • understand the basic issues and difficulties faced by individuals with autism in acquiring handwriting skills
  • be able to apply strategies in teaching handwriting skills to individuals with autism
  • learn to apply basic strategies to accommodate the difficulties in acquiring handwriting skills and to recognise when such strategies are needed
  • be able to identify situations when a referral to an occupational therapist is needed

  • have attended Fundamentals of Autism Workshop
  • are currently working directly with students/individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder
